500 Gallon Fish Tank: A More Expensive Hobbyist’s Delight

The beauty of the PIT tags is that the visitor to the Marine Center can scan individual fish when it comes to the front of the aquarium and this scanning, with the help of a radio wave, enables the PIT tag to create a characteristic frequency that is the result of an inductive process and the signal in turn is used to cue a computer to display the relevant video program. These video programs are 90 seconds that consist of highlighting different aspects of the research done by NOAA into the sablefish life history and population dynamics. The 500 gallon fish tank is not a common fish tank and of those that are found may have certain characteristics such as being divided into two halves – one for the reef and one for predators. The flow of water is surged into the center of the 500 gallon fish tank from where it is transformed into a wave that travels through both sections. The treatment of the 500 gallon fish tank is through the Model 24 Eco-Wheel system and is able to run off of one air pump. There is a beautiful 500 gallon ‘L’ Shaped In-Wall Marine fish tank available at Aquarium Design, which stands 40” tall and is 30/24” inches wide, and its length is 95/46” made out of Acrylic with a bent corner for placement in-wall and it has a port hole on the third side. It uses wet-dry-filter for filtration purposes. It has a pump for filer circulation and one for internal circulation and is also well lit using four 250 wt. 55K Metal Halides, as well as four 40 wt. fluorescents.

Replaced pH Probe Battery on Calium Reactor.
The pinpoint pH probe which monitors the effluent pH coming out of the calcium reactor needed a batter replacement. Typically the battery last for about 3 months.

When changing the battery its a good time to calibrate the pH probe. The probe calibration went perfectly required minimal adjustments.

Replaced Kalkwasser Mixer Step Motor, Now on Shutoff Relay.
The step motor which mixed my kalkwasser operated at a low 8 RPMs to keep the lower water column saturated but upper column produced clear kalkwasser which was dripped into the sump. This motor was not on a relay, it ran 24/7 and got pretty hot. I'm assuming it was not designed to be run this way.

I purchased a replacement step motor off e-bay and hard wired it to the top off water bottle relay switch which controls the top off water pump. Now when my 5 gallon water bottle of RO/DI is empty the water float relay will turn off the return pump and the kalkwasser mixer.

Hopefully this will extend the life of the mixer.

New Probes Installed.
Installed the new temperature probe for the AquaController Pro, calibrated the pH probe and installed the ORP probe. The first issue I noticed is that the temperature probe seems to be 2 degrees off on the low side.

As an interim fix, I programmed the AquaController Pro to add 2 degrees to the readout displayed and send an e-mail to Neptune Systems for clarification as the instruction manual hints that the probes are factory calibrated.

no snails, water change
No snails arrived, so i guess they’ll prolly turn up on tuesday or wednesday. Sensibly enough they don’t dispatch before the weekend, and promise to mail when they do. Of course, this also means there won’t be a monday delivery as they wouldn’t have done anything over the weekend. Just about to do a small water [...]
