Bringing the beauty and colorful splendor of aquatic life into your home can be accomplished with an aquarium and, to make the most of the available assortment, a 55 gallon fish tank may be in order. They come in a variety of styles with stands to fit into just about any home décor. Setting up a 55 gallon fish tank takes some pre-planning because once it is in place it will require a large amount of work to move. The initial step in setting up a 55 gallon fish tank will be its location. Once decided, make sure there is at least an eight to ten inch gap between the tank and wall to allow room for the filtering system. Additionally, a sufficient number of electric outlets need to be available to power accessories. If using a bottom under gravel filter, place that on the empty aquarium floor and then add gravel. The gravel in a 55 gallon fish tank should slightly slope upwards towards the back of the tank. The next step is adding the water and it is suggested that a clean plate be placed on top of the gravel to avoid displacing the gravel while the 55 gallon fish tank is being filled. Allow the water to hit the plate instead of the gravel. Once filled, you can start installing accessories, but do not plug any of them in just yet. First, install the filter on the back wall of the 55 gallon fish tank and then the thermometer. Assemble and install the heater near the filter’s input. If needed, more water can now be added. Add any decorations to the 55 gallon fish tank, but make sure there’s room for them to swim. Introducing Fish To New Environment After waiting 24 hours for the water temperature to even out, you are ready to add your fish. Start with just a few, maybe about 10 inches of fish, and do not immediately place them in the water. Allow the container in which they came to sit in the 55 gallon fish tank to help stabilize the nitrogen level. Once acclimated, the fish can be released into the aquarium. Add the light and cover and wait about four weeks before testing the ammonia level in the water. If everything is fine then you can add the rest of your fish, but keeping the population at not more than 55-inches of fish in a 55 gallon fish tank to prevent overcrowding and never add the water in which your fish were transported into your 55 gallon fish tank.

Found cracked impeller shaft on skimmer pump.
Drained out the EuroReef RC500 skimmer (holds about 8 gallons of water). Removed both SP4 recirculation pumps and inspected them. On the pump making the loud noise, I found the impeller shaft had cracked into two parts causing the magnet to bounce around.

This is the 4th impeller that has broke in this unit and they are expensive to replace. I'm going to consider swapping out the entire pump for a modified Eheim 1260 needle wheel pump instead. This is a very expensive upgrade but I'm hoping the impellers will last longer.

Cleaned EuroReef RC500 Skimmer, now makes a horrible sound.
Cleaned the EuroReef RC500 skimmer and cleaned out the SP4 recirculation pumps. Upon putting everything back together it made a horrible noise. I couldn't solve the problem, I left one of the pumps turned off until I have time to drain the skimmer and open up the pumps again.

New Bellus Angelfish Picture
It's been about a year since I posted a picture of this fish. I love this little guy. Great color, swims funny, always out and about.

blooming snails
Well I think i’ll have to divert my ranting from algae to snails now. The algae is proving much less of an issue, but the snails have started eating the plants! To recap, we got some snails here: http://www.jammeh.com/fishblog/2005/09/26/woooo/ and some more here: http://www.jammeh.com/fishblog/2005/11/11/more-snails/ and they’re very good in the main, nice colours, shiney etc. I was actually [...]

Ordered New Replacement Skimmer Pump - Eheim 1260
Called up EuroReef and ordered a new modified Eheim 1260 recirculating needle wheel pump for my RC-500 skimmer. Frustrating and annoyed that I have to keep tossing money into this skimmer, but the performance is amazing and the skimmer is totally worth it.
