Anyway ... lets come to the article and lets get started now :-)

Many aquarium owners use fish tank hoods for a variety of reasons. First, they ensure all wildlife (marine or land-loving depending on the type of aquarium) remain inside the tank. Additionally, fish tank hoods prevent foreign objects, especially natural predators like cats, from getting into the tank. Some specially designed fish tank hoods can even enhance the overall appearance of the fish tank by providing a finished look. Key Distinguishing Features Of Fish Tank Hoods The key differences between fish tank hoods appear to be whether or not they are lighted, and how they open to allow feeding access. Lighted fish tank hoods obviously enhance the viewing experience for people who enjoy observing the tank occupants. They can be used when the tank contains fish or other water borne creatures and when it contains “land lovers,” like lizards and hermit crabs. Note that lighted fish tank hoods can provide an important source of heat for cold-blooded reptiles. When used with a water tank, the length of time the light is left on may need to be regulated to ensure the heat produced doesn’t lead to high humidity levels. Different fish tank hoods feature different ways to feed the animals in the tank as well. This is a key feature for the owner of the tank – different animal species require different types of food which may be accommodated by different types of hoods. Some fish tank hoods open completely in a gull-wing style, whereby both panels life up and away from the body of the hood. This would be most useful for owners who must deposit relatively bulky food items into the tank. Others feature just one panel which lifts up, which is probably perfectly suitable for the majority of water environments, where owners typically feed flakes or small pellets. Aquarium owners should choose the fish tank hood that is most suited to their individual needs. Once they determine whether lighting is a good idea and how much access they must have with to the tank, they can select the final fish tank hood based on appearance. The diversity of styles can accommodate nearly any décor, from contemporary plastic and non-corrosive metal hoods to more traditional wooden hoods. Using an appropriate fish tank hood will not only protect the occupants of the tank and the owners, but can also contribute to the overall appearance of the room in which it is displayed.

poor guppies
Another one of the guppies died today, they really do drop off with depressing regularity. Hopefully there isn’t anything that we’re doing wrong, water conditions seem normal, everybody else is fine it’s just the particular ones that has trouble.

AquaController Temp Probe Failed.
The temperature probe on the AquaController Pro failed which not only resulting in "low" temperature alerts and engaged the heaters, but it is also the reference probe to the pH controller and conductivity controller.

The loss of the reference to the pH resulted in the calcium reactor being taken off line and tripping an alert of high salinity.

None of these are critical, just had to recheck levels manually with test kits and remove the calcium reactor and heaters from the switch boxes until a replace probe arrives which might take a week or so.

just done it
Three buckets today. I really hope those snails arrive soon, the dreaded algae is taking over again, and poor old sammy on his own just doesn’t have a big enough belly! The bristlenose catfish who has no bristles on his nose (podger) should be eating it, and I think he is, but is just a baby so [...]
